Although this is the first year of the Clonakilty Organic Arts Festival, it’s history is rooted deep within the community of Clonakilty, who have been performing and exhibiting the different elements of this diverse and unique festival for many years. There has always been a love of the visual coupled with the love of the community in Clonakilty. From the “Craic na Coillte” events of the late eighties, to the many street festivals such as the Busking Festival and the “Olde Time Fayre”, Clonakilty has been an enthusiastic patron of the arts for decades. Community groups such as Artists' Collectives as well as The Flower Club and the Tidy Towns, have kept the artistic integrity of Clonakilty alive. All of this led to the inevitable foundation of the Clonakilty Community Arts Centre in 2012, situated at Asna Square.
Clonakilty Community Arts Centre has facilitated many wonderful creative arts projects and events including more than a dozen Creative Arts Exhibitions each year. These exhibitions have showcased both Professional and Community artists including annual Cultural Exchanges e.g. with Belgium and France. Previously a Clonakilty Arts Trail for Cork Culture Night 2013 was hosted in collaboration with Clonakilty Model Village’s Road train and Clonakilty community organisations, showcasing professional artists and their works and artists from The Irish Wheelchair Association, Cope Foundation Clonakilty, Care Choice and Bushmount Nursing Homes.
Tadhg an Astna Players, Clonakilty’s new resident amateur theatre group, was established in 2012. Since then, the group has produced a number of performances ranging from full length, to one act plays and three ten by ten drama one day festivals. The group also ran a one day “reading” festival in June 2013 in Clonakilty that used local talent which performed drama, poetry, prose, history and children's events around Clonakilty.
The Clon Arts Festival committee has been working hard for the past several months, putting together an exciting programme. We would like to thank everyone in Clonakilty for the tremendous response and support for this festival!
